As North America’s largest manufacturer of Class 4–7 truck bodies, including local delivery trucks and cab-overs, the Texas company builds all the bodies of brown UPS trucks, as well as U-Haul bodies that aren’t built in-house. J.B. Poindexter & Co. is also the largest US manufacturer of funeral hearses — Poindexter jokes the bodies are so well made that people are dying to get inside them.
Poindexter began his career as an investment banker and venture capitalist, and in 1985 he initiated a series of individual acquisitions in the manufacturing and automotive sectors. In 1994, he pivoted from investor to buying and operating businesses for long-term growth under the newly created J.B. Poindexter & Co. This shift in strategy required Poindexter to learn how to operate and manage his newly acquired businesses.
