Acceptance speech

In the words of our judges

“J.B.’s four decades of transformative leadership have elevated this veteran-owned company into a manufacturing powerhouse, now embracing employee ownership and market expansion as part of his legacy.”

Led by decorated military veteran, seasoned entrepreneur, sole owner and namesake John Poindexter, J.B. Poindexter & Co.’s focus on strategic acquisitions and unwavering dedication to quality has earned the company its prominent place in the global manufacturing industry. As North America’s largest manufacturer of Class 4–7 truck bodies, including local delivery trucks and cab-overs, the Texas company builds all the bodies of brown UPS trucks, as well as U-Haul bodies that aren’t built in-house. J.B. Poindexter & Co. is also the largest US manufacturer of funeral hearses — Poindexter jokes the bodies are so well made that people are dying to get inside them.

Poindexter began his career as an investment banker and venture capitalist, and in 1985 he initiated a series of individual acquisitions in the manufacturing and automotive sectors. In 1994, he pivoted from investor to buying and operating businesses for long-term growth under the newly created J.B. Poindexter & Co. This shift in strategy required Poindexter to learn how to operate and manage his newly acquired businesses.

Through strategic acquisitions and steadfast commitment to innovation, J.B. Poindexter & Co. employs over 9,500 team members to offer a broad array of services in the manufacturing and automotive spaces through the company’s 13 business units. In addition to building truck bodies, specialty vehicles, and truck upfitting and accessories, the company also serves industries ranging from oil and gas to aerospace and defense. And he has prepared for the future by establishing a foundation to take over company ownership in the future.

Today, Poindexter continues the company’s long-term growth trajectory by consistently delivering high-quality products and embracing opportunities for innovation. For example, the EAVX business unit is developing next-generation vehicles for the world’s largest fleets, making clean electric vehicles accessible to a broader range of industries and solidifying the company’s position in the manufacturing market.
