Ethan’s research, as director for the Institute for Digital Public Infrastructure at UMass Amherst, focuses on recreating social media as a tool for civic engagement and social change. His work also examines the use of new media technologies by activists. Ethan is the author of Mistrust: Why Losing Faith in Institutions Provides the Tools to Transform Them, forthcoming from W.W. Norton, and Rewire: Digital Cosmopolitans in the Age of Connection, which won the Zócalo Book Prize in 2014. Ethan is based in Lanesboro, Massachusetts, US.
