Michael has over 20 years of corporate tax experience, including more than a decade focused on the Canadian mining sector. He advises a variety of mining companies on Canadian federal and provincial tax issues, including tax planning, M&A transactions, tax accounting and tax controversy matters.

Michael regularly contributes to EY mining publications and is co-author of EY’s Guide to the Taxation of Mining Operations.

Michael is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, the CPABC Professional Development Program Advisory Group (Taxation), and the Association for Mineral Exploration BC – Tax, Securities and Investment Committee.

He holds a BCom (Honors) in Accounting from the University of South Africa and received his CA designation from the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1999. He spent eight years working in EY’s Tax practice in Johannesburg before joining the Vancouver office in 2008.

“I’m passionate about helping others achieve their potential and have pursued this both at EY in my role as a coach and counsellor to our diverse teams, as well as in other areas of my life, such as coaching my son’s soccer team and my prior involvement in mentoring Indigenous high school students wishing to pursue a higher education.”
