Leadership change as current Chief Legal Counsel, Doris Stamml, announces retirement
EY is pleased to welcome Shara Roy, formerly of Lenczner Slaght, as a partner to the Canadian firm. Roy will transition to Chief Legal Counsel and member of the Executive Committee, replacing retiring Counsel, Doris Stamml. As Stamml retires from her distinguished tenure, EY looks forward to navigating the complex business landscape with Roy's diverse thinking and inclusive leadership. This purpose-driven transition reinforces EY's commitment to fostering a better working world while empowering innovation, diversity and equity at work.
“Navigating the increasingly complex business landscape will require the knowledge, passion and diverse thinking that Shara brings to the table and we’re incredibly excited to have her join the EY team,” says Jad Shimaly, Chair and CEO at EY Canada. “As we welcome a brilliant new leader, we also bid farewell to Doris, a remarkable member of our executive leadership team who has led with integrity every step of the way, helping to enforce our purpose and create a legacy of building a better working world for all of our stakeholders.”
Since joining Lenczner Slaght in 2011, Roy has developed deep expertise in complex commercial litigation including professional liability, securities litigation, class action suits and restructuring and insolvency. Her strong leadership and focused skillset afforded her recent recognition as one of Canada's Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers by Canadian Lawyer.
Roy is committed to fostering greater diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession. As co-creator of Lenczner Slaght’s award-winning ReferToHer.com website, she helped level the playing field on referrals in the legal profession. Under Roy’s leadership, the firm implemented name-anonymized hiring for law students. She also helped establish a Diversity and Inclusion Sub-Committee at the Commercial List Court User's Committee. Roy is an active mentor to University of Toronto law students and to young lawyers through the Ontario Bar Association.
“I’m thrilled to start this new chapter at EY. The firm’s commitment to innovation makes it an incredibly exciting environment to join,” shares Roy. “I have long admired EY’s culture of inclusivity and collaboration and look forward to rolling up my sleeves to support continued growth for the firm and its clients.”
A seasoned legal professional, Stamml began her career with EY Canada joining the General Counsel’s Office in 1988, later becoming Chief Legal Counsel and a member of the Executive Committee. She also acts as the Executive Managing Partner of EY’s affiliated law firm, EY Law LLP. Stamml has been recognized as a champion of women and diversity in the legal and accounting professions. She is a longstanding and active United Way volunteer and is Co-Chair of its Women United initiative.
“I’m honoured to be passing on the reigns to a passionate, highly respected leader, in and outside of the courtroom, with a strong track record of building the next generation of leaders by placing empathy and diversity at the heart of what she does,” adds Stamml.
EY Canada congratulates both Roy and Stamml on their accomplishments.
