Working at a global firm
Michelle joined EY as a graduate in Aberdeen in 2011. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and progressing to Assistant Manager, Michelle relocated to Glasgow to be closer to her family and friends.
Throughout her career, EY has offered Michelle the perfect balance between opportunities for professional development and an inclusive and friendly environment that fosters a sense of well-being and belonging.
“The global exposure, portfolio of clients and support network give you all the benefits that come with working for a global firm, while working in a team that feels like a small company. I really enjoy going into the office, particularly during our busy periods when there’s a real sense of camaraderie as we work through challenges together. The culture here is warm and welcoming, and we all support one another professionally and personally.”
Introducing flexibility
In 2019, Michelle and her partner welcomed their first child and are now expecting their third. Before becoming a mum, Michelle witnessed senior leaders in her team working flexibly to accommodate family life, empowering her to do the same.
She reduced to a four-day week and worked with her team to find the right balance between her personal and professional commitments.
"I’ve been able to find the right balance of work and life with the support of those around me. My work fluctuates throughout the year, increasing during peak times and decreasing during the summer holidays. It works, giving me the time I need to deliver for my clients and prioritise being a mum. I’ve built a lot of trust with my team and even on my working days, I can accommodate my kids' school drop-offs and pick-ups. As long as the work is delivered, you are empowered to do what you need to make it work!"
By having a say in how she works, and by watching others lead by example, Michelle felt empowered to build her career her way.
Empowering others
Having benefited from flexible working and seeing the positive impact role models can have on people's sense of wellbeing and personal fulfilment – Michelle now helps others find balance in their roles.
"I'm passionate about encouraging work-life balance and flexibility in my team. As a parent, I've had the support I needed, which has empowered me to find the right work-life balance. But this shouldn't just be the norm for parents and carers — everyone should have the chance to find that balance, and I'm there to help them do it and give them the support they need!"
