A career in Market Risk

Reshmi Menon is a Financial Services Senior Manager within Market Risk, Business Consulting at EY. She joined EY in Bangalore in 2011 and is now based in our London office, and has spanned a career that has led to her working with a broad range of global Tier 1 Capital Markets clients at EY.

I
am from Kerala, India (known as God’s own Country). After completing my bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and master’s in Finance, I joined EY in Bangalore in 2011. I have been working with EY UK since 2015 across a wide variety of projects and clients in Investment Banking. I am a keen linguist and I can speak five different languages. 

What attracted you to join EY?

EY is the leading consultancy in the quantitative risk domain which is my core interest and it has been rated as one of the best places to work.

Talk through your role at EY?

My key role in EY is to understand the quantitative risk models for our clients in the derivative space. This entails me to develop my managerial and people skills. I am also People Champion for the Market Risk Team and lately have been involved in many Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) initiatives. As the People Champion for the team, one of my main tasks is to make sure people stay connected. We have monthly team meetings and we have casual coffee sessions within the team to ensure people stay connected. I also take out the time and encourage other counsellors to do one to one catch ups within the team.

What do you like most about your role?

I get to work across a wide variety of projects with people from different EY practices, whilst interacting and sharing experiences with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

What surprised you most about EY and the people?

The global connectivity that EY provides is mind boggling. For whatever challenge I have faced in my work, I have found someone who has been in similar shoes, which helped in framing a global solution. The collaborative work environment is the best.

Can you talk about the culture at EY?

The culture of EY is one of the most important reasons why I have stayed on for 10+ years. EY foster a culture of knowledge sharing, diversity and above all open and direct one-to-one communication. People are extremely friendly and always ready to assist you with anything you might be facing. I have worked with Partners who genuinely care for their employees and are supportive of their growth.

How has your role evolved during your time at EY?

I joined as an Associate and have since gone on to become Senior manager. During these years I have worked with clients across the US, UK and EMEIA and led a large team of Quant Analysts, which helped me develop both as professional manager and a personable individual.

What is your proudest career moment?

I have had multiple moments within EY where I felt immensely proud of my team and the support they provide. The recent one being the promotion of my three counselees.
