IFRS is the common global language for financial statements, just as English is for business. IFRS financial statements help companies tell their own unique stories to stakeholders globally.

Areas of focus

Nicola Michele Sawaki leads the IFRS accounting technical team at EY Japan. In addition to supporting audit quality enhancement for IFRS financial reporting matters, her team offers internal and external IFRS information updates and training in Japanese.

She has served Japanese audit clients from 2002, and has focused on EFRS practices since 2008. She was the leader of internal training for EY Japan's member firms from 2014-2016.

She first joined EY in London in 1991 and worked on the audits of a wide range of industries including trading houses, financial institutions and manufacturers and retailers.

She is an ICAEW-qualified chartered accountant (UK).  Originally from New Zealand, she obtained an honors degree from the University of Waikato in New Zealand, and has professional fluency in Japanese (having passed the JLPT1 exam).

Building a better working world

I work with many of our audit clients and teams in accessing the accounting and disclosure of complex transactions in IFRS.  Transparent accounting information that reflects their reality is important for the long term financial health of our clients and for capital markets.

I teach about IFRS inside EY Japan's member firms as well as at a number of Japanese universities, and work to promote a deeper understanding of IFRS, an international perspective, and the use of English as a communication tool.
