Hiroshi Sakurai Profile
Mr. Hiroshi Sakurai was born in 1950 in the Shuto district of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. After graduating from Matsuyama University of Commerce (now Matsuyama University), he began his career at Nishimiya Shuzo Co., Ltd. (forerunner of Nihonsakari Co., Ltd.) in 1973. In 1976, he joined Asahi Shuzo Co. Ltd. but left after a difference of opinions with his father who also owned the company. Mr. Sakurai founded Sakurai Shoji Company, a building stone wholesaler, in 1979 only to return to Asahi Shuzo Co., Ltd. in 1984 following the sudden death of his father. He has restructured the family business by focusing on Dassai sake, classified as Junmai Daiginjo (top-quality sake brewed from rice grains milled to 50% or less of their weight, without added alcohol or sugar). He has been a serial innovator, introducing year-round brewing to his employees and growing the company as a result. He has been Chairman since 2016.
About Asahi Shuzo Co., Ltd.

Dassai, which is produced at a brewery deep in the mountains of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is a favorite of sake drinkers in more than 25 countries. Asahi Shuzo aspires to be a sake company that brings joy and color to people’s lives.
Comments from Mr. Kazuhiko Toyama, Chairman of the judging panel
“The panel was very excited to meet entrepreneurs from across the country who embrace diverse business models. Reflecting ESG trends, they are all aware of social responsibility, including sustainability and eco-friendly practices, while running economically-sound businesses. Among the entrepreneurs, we selected Mr. Sakurai as someone who would be able to communicate universal values from Japan to the world. He embodies a sake culture that is eco-friendly and healthy, and represents a high value-added business. More specifically, he leverages nature’s bounty while producing minimal waste, from rice-farming to the reuse of residues, and ensuring both efficiency and quality. We believe that these qualities of Mr. Sakurai will have global appeal at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year.”
