As a representative of the housing association sector board, Bas-Wouter Littel is responsible for managing and implementing strategy and policy at housing associations in the Netherlands that are EY clients. Also works closely with sector partners who monitor and advise housing corporations. Continuously looks for opportunities to deliver the highest level of service and quality from every EY service line.
He studied accountancy at Nyenrode Business University and has worked at EY since 1992. In addition to his work for EY as accounting auditor, he has been responsible for the maintenance of houses in a small block of shared-courtyard homes in Groningen. “The residents are less well-off people who got a home thanks to a private bequest. So in this position I'm on the other side of the table. That provides great perspective.”
“Complexity and regulatory burden are increasing significantly at housing corporations. In my role, I support clients in dealing with these developments, remove obstacles for them and encourage a process that focuses on results and the best auditing quality. Stricter regulation under the public-interest entity regime, for example, means that housing corporations with more than 5,000 rental units are placed under the same regime as listed companies. Customers struggle with that. I see it as my task to help provide clarity and solutions.”
How Bas-Wouter is building a better working world
“Housing corporations are fundamentally social enterprises, in which everything revolves around tenants and thus good public housing. I think it's important to contribute to this from my position as an accountant. The intersection of civil society and private business sectors - present in every housing corporation - is a very interesting place to work.”
