Costa Rica | The Ministry of Foreign Trade informs on the entry into force of the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation

The European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) is part of the "Green Deal" initiative and establishes a series of conditions for the introduction and sale of products and by-products from cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy, and wood as well as derived products in the EU market.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX) informed the export sector that on 9 June, the European Union (EU) Deforestation-Free Regulation was published in the Official Journal of the EU and will come into force 20 days after its publication.

This regulation was approved within the framework of the EU Green Deal and aims to establish rules for the introduction and sale of cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy, and wood as well as their derived products in the EU market.

Under this regulation, these products shall not be placed or made available on the market or exported, unless all the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • They are deforestation-free;
  • They have been produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production, and;
  • They are covered by a due diligence statement.
  • The application of these new rules for operators and large companies will start from December 30, 2024, and for micro or small companies will start from June 30, 2025.
