Chiel Smit assists companies with all their fiscal issues. He mainly works for medium-sized multinationals with their head offices in the Netherlands, in particular large or rapidly growing family businesses.
He studied fiscal law at the University of Amsterdam and has been working at EY since 1996. He has worked for EY in both the Netherlands and abroad, and always promotes talent development within EY.
“Clicking with someone in person really matters to me. I don’t think of the client as a number and, at the same time, I don’t want to be seen as that either. You can quickly get a feel for whether it will work with someone. Loyalty is a core value for me. If it’s really important, clients can call me anytime, day or night. Sometimes a new client says: “Because you’re such a nice guy, I’ll switch to EY.” I think that’s a huge compliment.”
How Chiel is building a better working world
“I guide clients through the tax jungle so they can focus on what they’re good at: doing business. I love complex questions. Finding a solution that’s both good for the company and is acceptable to the tax authorities too. Working with young colleagues drives me too. Their ambition triggers me to help them develop further. That’s my biggest boost at work.”
