In 1877, when the electrical industry was still in its infancy, Heinrich Weidmann converted an old water-powered mill to a pressboard and cardboard manufacturing factory. One of the products they produced was a material that could be used for electrical insulation.
In 1923, the company was acquired by Jean Tschudi–Klaesi who later handed it over to his son, Hans Tschudi–Faude. Under Hans's guidance, the group navigated a crucial restructuring, adopting new innovations and overcoming challenges.
Dr. Felix Tschudi-Hubacher took over the company from his father Hans Tschudi in 1968. Fourth generation siblings, Daniel Tschudi joined the group in 1993 as a transformer specialist and his sister, Franziska Tschudi Sauber, joined in 1995 as the Head of Corporate Development. In 2001, Franziska and Daniel took charge of Weidmann Holding in Rapperswil-Jona. Today, the Weidmann Group is the world market leader for electrical insulation of transformers, and the company specializes in high-quality plastics components for medical and pharmaceutical technology. Their areas of expertise encompass electrical, fiber and medical technology.
With 2,700 employees at over 30 locations worldwide, the Weidmann Group is one of the few industrial groups to maintain its market dominance internationally. Franziska Tschudi Sauber and Daniel Tschudi are the Family Enterprise of Excellence Award recipients for Switzerland in 2023.
