Michiel Swets provides tax advice to large multinationals that invest in the Netherlands and from the Netherlands in the rest of the world. Focuses on the chemical industry, mostly for clients headquartered in the Netherlands, North America and the Middle East.
“Acquisitions, for example, often involve dozens of countries. All with their own tax rules, which also change regularly. I advise on the relevant tax issues and ensure an optimal solution, in which the company pays no more tax than necessary. I love puzzling that out, but I also love sparring with all our international colleagues.”
Studied fiscal economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam, followed by international tax law (cum laude) at Leiden University. Has worked at EY since 1999, including a period (2004 – 2006) on the staff of the Dutch Tax Desk in New York.
“The chemical industry is confronting many new issues, all of which have tax-related implications. For example, what are the tax consequences of innovations, the energy transition or the divestiture of business units?”
How Michiel is building a better working world
“Although tax is certainly not part of a company's core business, we certainly help take the business to the next level. That's great to be a part of.”
