This year, the global competition organized by EY will challenge the participants with yet another intriguing question: How do you preserve biodiversity with the click of a button?

With its ambition to embed sustainability into every aspect of the business, EY is now a proud carbon-negative organization. It is working tirelessly to achieve the next milestone, which is to reduce its absolute emissions on the journey to net zero in 2025. In addition, EY is using its experience, services, solutions and people to collaborate with others and help them transition to a low carbon future.

With its focus on making economic growth both inclusive and sustainable, EY launched EY Better Working World Data Challenge. In 2021, the participants were challenged with finding digital solutions to minimize the effects of forest fires! More than 8,700 participants from over 150 countries participated in developing solutions for automatic fire-edge detection using airborne and satellite imagery. This is now helping fire authorities improve front-line decision-making during fire emergency responses and help save lives, property and wildlife.

With the same zeal, EY has put forth another thought-provoking question in its Better Working World Data Challenge this year — How do you preserve biodiversity with the click of a button? With this key question, EY is aligning itself with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals to maintain a healthy ecosystem.

Biodiversity, which makes up the entire ecosystem, is under threat. It is estimated that every 20 minutes, an animal or plant species becomes extinct. With half of global GDP being moderately or highly dependent on ecosystems, preserving biodiversity is indeed a pressing need.

Therefore, during this challenge, participants will be required to build computational models to locate biodiversity — specifically frogs. These amphibians play a central role in the ecosystem, helping scientists study the health of the bionetwork. Hence, the best models will be made available to governments, researchers and industries to help guide conservation and restoration initiatives.
