Ridhwan Khan, CEO, Mobicel

South African entrepreneur Ridhwan Khan is driven by the idea that everyone should have access to world-class technology. Growing up in a poor South African neighborhood, Ridhwan knew mobile devices were too expensive for those on a low income and saw a gap in the market for an affordable home-grown product.

He founded Mobicel in 2007, and in just over a decade, the company has become one of South Africa’s fastest growing suppliers of mobile devices. Mobicel phones are now sold in more than 5,200 stores nationwide, and the company is listed with all major South African cellular operators, controlling an 18% share of the South African cellular market.

Ridhwan is proud of how he has challenged the perception that technology is just for a small minority who can afford it and sold by only a handful of multinational corporations. He says, “For me, success is measured, not merely in profits or expanding market share, but in the impact that my work has on the lives of others.”
