Decarbonizing, decentralizing and digitizing the traditional grid model
Distribution system operators face multiple challenges in transitioning to a new energy system, such as:
Dealing with reduced appetite for large-scale investments due to pressure from customers and regulators for greater interaction and responsiveness from energy providers
Supervising utilities that are focusing on core services and strategically outsourcing managed services
Overseeing flexibility, interoperability and scalability of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) offerings that are now becoming critical
Addressing the ‘Waterfall’ approach, which is costly and prone to delay agile change delivery
Identifying utilities that are shifting delivery risk onto product/service providers
The new energy world creates an urgency for utilities to build an enhanced set of digital capabilities that will support maintaining its role as the connector of energy supply and demand.
EY UtilityWave is a digital offering that helps our clients to seamlessly transition to the digital grid. The offering helps deliver the capabilities needed to tackle the biggest challenges of a digital, dynamic energy system in one business-centric platform that connects multiple legacy systems, new IoT devices and diverse sources of data. The capabilities include broad visibility, effective control and opportunities to unlock real value from data. Providing insights to a US utility to manage a major rollout of five million meters in an integrated suite of management dashboards
The client was about to launch a major deployment of five million new smart meters — a highly complex program that required them to integrate customer, field force, supply chain and safety data.
Based on extensive experience in deployment operations support, EY teams worked with the client to formulate a deployment strategy, provide a point of view on key metrics and identify the disparate data sources to develop interactive visualizations of their performance.
EY teams developed a suite of deployment performance management dashboards that provided executive and day-to-day operational management views of the deployment progress and allowed for rapid assessment of performance and identification of risks.
Challenges
Build the deployment strategy and key metrics for the program
Translate these data into key measures
Develop interactive visualizations of their performance to manage deployment execution effectively
Benefits
Exercise greater operational control over asset rollout
Gain visibility across key operational processes
Improve understanding of operational performance against critical KPIs and root causes of risks/issues
Obtain real-time, ‘anywhere, anytime’ access to progress
