Inflation: Theory and Practice

Who Should Attend?

The session is of particular interest to all professionals, government, private sector officials, as well as students interested in deepening or refreshing their knowledge of current economic affairs with a focus on inflation.

Introduction

Inflation has been increasingly making headlines in the last 12 months. The US Federal Reserve core inflation indicator hit a 40-year high in November 2021, and Eurozone inflation hit the highest level in 13 years in October 2021. In Malta, prices continue their upward trend, with rising import prices leading to increases in prices across the board, from construction costs to food items and most services. At this stage, energy prices have increased globally but are still being cushioned through government intervention locally. High inflation is ultimately dampening standards of living and economic growth projections. This session aims to explore the concept of inflation and its historical perspectives, key drivers and impacts, calculation methodologies and latest trends.

Session Outline

The speakers will cover the following topics:

A history of inflation: a timeline which takes us through key historical situations, such as the hyperinflation experienced in 1920s (Germany), the great depression in the 1930s, the 1970s energy crisis (oil price shock), as well as what happened during wars

What is inflation? how does inflation work? Inflation is discussed from a theoretical standpoint, as to the main drivers and components of the phenomenon, and relationships with other economic variable such as interest rates and unemployment

Ripple effects: what else does inflation lead to, besides an increase in prices? What tends to have the largest impact?

Methodologies: different methodologies behind the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) and the Retail Price Index (RPI)

Latest Trends – Malta and EU: going into the latest figures and trends, including the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war upon prices.
